Information used by VoteMtaani
Email sign-in uses Supabase to verify your account. Supabase handles your password and sends confirmation and recovery emails through the configured email service. VoteMtaani stores your verified account identifier, display name and email. Your password is not stored in the poll or payment database. Completing registration saves your chosen display name, whether you want to participate or organize, the registration time, and the version of the terms you accepted. This preference does not grant staff access. Organizers submit poll details, candidate names, bios, and photos. They must have permission from every candidate before publishing that information.
Payments and phone numbers
The voting form accepts a Kenyan M-Pesa number. A payment request is sent only after you confirm the displayed amount. A vote payment record retains the last four digits, its amount, status, current candidate choice, and receipt reference. Historical choice-change records are retained for integrity checks. Current Boost and Legit votes cannot be switched. Legit voting uses a keyed, category-specific hash of the normalized phone number to limit repeated votes. Boost voting permits multiple packages. Browser recovery identifiers link a receipt to the browser that requested it. These are pseudonymous identifiers, not anonymous data. Political choices are withheld from financial tables and transaction exports. A payout request stores the full recipient number so the platform administrator can review the destination. Dashboard tables mask phone numbers.
When Paystack payments are enabled, your full M-Pesa number and receipt email are sent to Paystack to process the transaction. VoteMtaani sends a payment reference without the poll title or your candidate choice. Vote records are associated with your signed-in account or a temporary payment session. Your M-Pesa PIN is never requested or stored by this website.
What other people can see
Approved polls, candidate photos, biographies, total vote counts, and results are visible to people who can access the site. Your payment information and individual voting choices are not included in public result downloads. Administrators can inspect payment records; organizers can inspect payment records for their own polls.
Why information is used
Information supports poll review, payment verification, accurate counting, organizer earnings, fraud prevention, and resolving payment errors. Candidate data is used to present the contest. Account and ticket emails support confirmation, recovery and attendance. Marketing messages are separate.
Cookies and storage
Email sign-in uses secure session cookies managed by Supabase. The light/dark preference is saved on your device. Guest payment and support recovery use essential secure cookies. Browser storage retains recent order references and pending-request identifiers so an interrupted request can be recovered. Clearing the cookie removes access to that browser’s saved session; keep your receipt or ticket reference. Polls, votes, transactions, and uploaded photos are saved on the site’s servers. Do not upload sensitive documents or real financial credentials into poll fields.
Free opinion responses
Legit categories accept one vote per entered phone number. Free Legit categories do not collect payment. No OTP is used and phone ownership is not verified. A category-specific keyed hash of the normalized number is used to limit repeat submissions. This is pseudonymization, not anonymous voting: a privileged operator with access to the key and account data could make a match. Public reports contain only aggregate counts.
Support, profiles, and analytics
Support requests store your message, reference, status, and the team’s reply. Operational notes are restricted to authorized administrators. The full audit history and private vote-correction evidence are restricted to the platform owner. Participation cards are shared only when you choose; they exclude your candidate choice and payment details. Profile details include an optional contact email and payout number. Access is limited by account and staff role. Aggregate page and sharing counters store a day, poll, source, and event count; they do not store an individual browsing history or candidate preference.
Reviews
Submitting a review stores your account identifier, public display name, rating and message. You must agree to publication. Pending or rejected reviews are visible to moderators; approved reviews show your chosen display name publicly. Submit a Privacy request through Help to request removal.
Poll discussions
Comments and replies show your display name, text and posting time publicly. They do not reveal your voting choice, payment details, email or phone number. You may edit or delete your own comment. Deleting it removes its text while preserving other people’s replies. Moderators may hide harmful comments or close a discussion. Reports are private to the moderation team; moderation decisions and reasons are recorded. Comment identifiers, authorship and timestamps are retained for thread continuity and abuse controls.
Retention and requests
Transaction, poll, upload, and support records are retained for operating the service and resolving payment or integrity issues. Use Help and choose Privacy request to ask for access, correction, or deletion; requests are reviewed by the operator. Transaction or integrity records may need to be retained where required by law.
Your data rights
You may have rights to information, access, objection, correction, and deletion under Kenyan data protection law. You can submit a Privacy request through the support page. Some transaction information may need to be retained for lawful record keeping. See the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner’s explanation of data-subject rights.
